Boots

If you race in serious competition, you need a ski boot with FIS-approved features. If you're like the other 95 to 98% of skiers out there, you only need the performance features that combine appropriate flex with a comfortable fit. For the guys who push the envelope, the Nordica SpeedMachine 120 is the optimal choice. It's a supportive boot design that enhances energy transmission for superb performance. Nordica designed their SpeedMachine line to combine expert-level precision with comfort that feels good throughout the day. When you consider the 120 flex rating (Nordica's max is 150 for the racing boots) the SpeedMachine 120 is probably everything any performance-oriented advanced skier could require outside of serious racing. The SpeedMachine 120 offers most of the same features found on Nordica's ultra-stiff SpeedMachine 130 ski boot, although you don't enjoy the extra 10-mm. on the Velcro top strap or racing-rigid flex rating. What you do get is the same bi-injected boot design with soft pliable plastic throughout comfort areas and rigid material where energy transfer is critical to precision edge hold. The narrower Velcro strap (it attaches to the rear cuff) also has a progressive flex that you can adjust to meet your needs. No matter how you fit the strap, you still get that cool active rebound that sets it apart from other Velcro strap closures. This boot also has a heat-ready liner that accepts most of the boot heating systems currently available on the market. While it's certainly not the cheapest ski boot you'll find on the mountain, you get a lot of exceptional performance from the SpeedMachine 120--a factor that can make all the difference on big mountain vacations, and especially at the finish line.

Coast-to-coast, the largest emerging skier demographic remains the all-mountain ski enthusiast. That's why it makes sense that Nordica developed their Hot Rod ski boots exclusively for all-mountain functionality. While the Hot Rod 105 isn't the stiffest boot in the Hot Rod collection (the stiffest is the Hot Rod Pro 125 by 20 flex points) we think it has all the power transmission potential that most advanced and expert skiers would require on any side of the mountain. The Hot Rod 105 features the same Full Shock Eraser (FSE) features as the Hot Rod Pro 125 without the FIS-approved heel wedge. Full Shock Eraser technology enhances the shock absorption features in your skis by providing further vibration dampening, a quality any skier who skis fast or in varied conditions will immediately appreciate. The Hot Rod 105 has a wide assortment of FSE components, including the wedge, gel liner and adjustable rear spoiler. Like other Nordica ski boots, the bi-injected shell in the Hot Rod 105 offers soft pliable plastic throughout comfort areas and rigid material where energy transfer is critical to precision edge hold. It's a great combination of performance-oriented features and essential comfort components for going all-mountain, all day.

Some ski boot manufacturers seem to offer you choices every season: An ultra-rigid performance boot that delivers big during two-minute downhill runs, or a plush, thermally-enhanced boot that sacrifices performance characteristics for insulating comfort. The Head Edge+ 11 is one of the few boots to offer performance characteristics with amazing thermal warmth. In terms of flex, the Edge+ 11 comes out near the top with a Flex index of 90. The Edge+ 11 also features a distinct stabilizer frame that helps reinforce the shell, adding more stability and energy transmission performance between your foot and the ski binding. Beneath everything is Head's Grip Sole, a soft rubber insert that makes walking easier and safer than conventional ski boots. Some ski boot manufacturers adopt a cookie-cutter approach to making kids boots, assuming that one size fits all and that most of their demographic takes a break for play/nap time after lunch in ski school. Luckily for the mogul-hopping kids, there is Nordica's Hot Rod 60. It's a youth-sized performance ski boot that offers a varied flex according to foot sizes, and that results in more performance potential for young-but-experienced skiers. To keep flex and child proportions in balance, Nordica created three distinct flex ratings for the Hot Rod 60 sizes. If you choose a boot sized 19-21.5, the flex rating is 55. If you choose a boot sized 22-24.5, the flex rating is 60. If you choose a boot sized 25-28, the flex rating is 65. Other nice touches are the four Micro-adjustable buckles and the cool transparent shell and cuff material. Whether you're looking for a stiffer boot for your advancing skier or a boot that doesn't oversimplify fit features, Nordica's Junior Hot Rod 60 belongs at the head of the class.
