Americans have an advantage in traveling abroad that most of our neighboring countries do not have. In the US, a passport is good for ten years. Most other countries do not have this extended period. And there is also the option to renew US passport online, providing even more convenience.
Renew Online
With the option of doing it on the computer, you know you can do it whenever you want. All you need to do is find a website and then find out what is going to be required. You can save yourself the trouble of finding a facility and giving up time in your day.
Ten Year Period
Just knowing that you do not have to visit a facility with all of your documents can give you a great peace of mind. And you will receive the same ten-year period when you renew. You can do this if you have a book or card that is not more than fifteen years old.
Simple Process
You will need to fill in the DS-82, the application form, online. When you find the form, make sure it has a barcode on it. If it does not, it could slow down the process. Fill it in, print it and then make sure you sign it. Ensure that all needed information, including the date and your signature, is on the form.
New Photos
The most essential part of your renewal will be the photos. You will need two photos for this. They are required to be a certain size, specific background color, and they must be identical. Make sure you know the regulations if you take them yourself. Your best option would be to use a professional photographer.
Turn In Old Passport
You must also be able to turn into the agency your expired passport. This must have been issued within the last fifteen years and at that time, you were sixteen years of age or older. If you had a name change since it was issued, proof of the name change will be required. The book or card must also be undamaged.
Other Documents
If the travel that you have scheduled is work related, you might be asked for a letter from a superior on company letterhead. This would be stating where you are traveling and your travel dates. If it is personal, an itinerary or copy of flight information might be requested.
Fees
If you need it back faster, having it expedited can be an option. There is an extra charge for this service but it is worth it if you need to travel unexpectedly. Payment, to be included with your paperwork, will need to be in the form of a certified check or a money order. And it should be for an amount to cover the book, service fees and expediting if you decide to do this.
This gives you the convenience to renew pasport online and have it sent directly to your home. You do have the option to pay an extra fee to have the USA Passport online expedited, as well. When the application has been processed you will receive your new passport. At this time they will also return your old book.
