There are a total of three UNESCO World Heritage sites in Agra. If a place has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, then you can be sure that it’s definitely worth visiting. The most famous of the three, the Taj Mahal, is something you absolutely cannot miss out on. Constructed out of white marble, the Mughal king Shah Jahan had it constructed out of love for his favorite wife. It’s true that the building itself is gorgeous, but it’s the rest of the complex that ties it all together; the vibrantly colorful gardens, tranquil reflecting pools, and detailed stonework are impressive. Upon entering, you will see the walls are inlaid with semi-precious stones, and you will also see the tombs of the king and his wife.
Yet another UNESCO World Heritage Site and super well-known landmark is Agra Fort. This impressive fort is made out of gorgeous red sandstone. While the outside looks hard and foreboding, the inside looks like a paradise. There are many stunning buildings on the inside, and each is worth checking out. The Pearl Mosque, the Musamman Burj, Jahangir’s Palace, and the Mirrored Palace are all good ones. If it is a nice day out, climb to the top, where you can see the Taj Mahal in the distance. This fort is where the king who built the Taj Mahal, Shah Jahan, was kept, a prisoner of his own son.
The third UNESCO World Heritage Site is Fatehpur Sikri. Built in 1570 by the Mughal king Akbar, this spectacular town is located only a small distance from Agra. Many people are sure to include it in their tour of Agra, as it is a large complex chock-full of cool things to see and explore. There are several different architectural influences visible. Buland Darwaza is called the “Gate of Magnificence,” and for good reason. This 15-story high gate is the largest in the world and is one of India’s many impressive monuments.
Travelers flock from all over the world to see the amazing monuments in Agra. That isn’t the only reason though. It is a hub of Indian culture, which is so intricate and beautiful. Remember that you will need a passport before you head to Agra, including a United States passport for children. Go online to get it handled. Also remember that things like replacing a stolen U.S. online passport are also available.
